I started Restoration Werks in late 2006 with less than $500 bucks and a free ad posting on Craig’s List. During year one, I worked on over 80 motorcycles of all types. It was mostly service work that other shops would not touch because of the age of the bikes or the extent of the labor. The original plan for the shop was to focus on restoration exclusively, but heavy demand for specialized service work accidentally lead the shop in another direction. I expanded, and it ruined it for me. I started this business to have more control over my work and life, not less.
As 2010 begins, I am now focusing exclusively on the restoration of vintage European motorcycles, scooters and micro-cars. Occasionally, I will be working on vintage bicycles and motor-bicycles as well, simply because, well… I dig ‘em. I will continue to do select service work on all makes and models of machines, especially for existing customers. However, service is not the shop’s primary focus and will be scheduled as time allows.
The one-man-shop will be less of a service garage and more of a workshop where I can take on more unique projects. This allows me to be more selective about what work I take in, and give vastly better service and pricing to customers as well. Being more selective is not some sort of snobbery, or anything of the kind. It is simply my best attempt to preserve the shop environment as a place for the pursuit of craft, rather than solely for profit. Ultimately, I want to produce the very finest products and services, and the way to do that with this business is by staying small. This decision will also greatly aid in keeping projects more on schedule.
The first three years have taught me that all of this will not be easy. It will take substantial effort and sacrifice, but ultimately it is worth it. I am truly fortunate to have a business where I can work for such great (and patient) people that I also consider my good friends… and in some cases even family.
